France’s Champagne region underwent remarkable agricultural development beginning in the 1950s. Very quickly, and thanks to the vision of a few pioneers, some agricultural cooperatives decided to appropriate the added value from processing certain productions, and invested in particular in the brewing industry.
An initial malting plant was opened in Reims in 1961. A second plant was built in 1975 at Pringy (Marne). Then other malting plants were acquired – in Vitry-le-François (Marne) in 1977 and in Metz (Moselle) and Aire sur la Lys (Pas de Calais) in the 1980s. These were the beginnings of what was to become, in 1984, the Malteurop Group, a group which since its very origins has been built on privileged ties between agriculture and industry.
Located in the heart of the European Union’s prime malting barley production basin, the Group’s four French plants have a total production capacity of 410,000 metric tons and are committed to ensuring the security of supplies to French and German breweries as well as supplying the major export markets.
Malteurop France produces basic malts — Pilsen and Munich — from two- and six-row barley, as well as wheat malt.
All the Malteurop France malting plants are GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) and ISO 22000 (Food Safety) certified.

The Group Leadership Team brings together the members of the Executive Committee and the directors of the local units.
The Malteurop Group operates 27 industrial sites in 13 countries.
The story begins in the 1960s in France with the first malting plant, opened in Reims by an agricultural cooperative. It continues with the acquisition and creation of several malting plants, then the birth of Malteurop as a company in 1984…
The Malteurop Group is the world’s leading malt producer, with a current annual production capacity of more than 2,200,000 tons. The Group is present in 14 countries in Europe, North America, Oceania and Asia, with 27 industrial sites and 1,183 employees.
In order to offer its customers new gains in added value, Malteurop now integrates intangible competencies such as risk management. Malteurop handles management of industrial risks, risks of interruption of supplies of raw materials, and financial risks related to the volatility of malting barley prices.
Malteurop has an international Technical Department whose goal is to optimize the industrial process at two levels – that of the malting process itself and that of the design and renovation of malting plants.
